For them, tea is not just a beverage, but a way of life—a soothing ritual that brings comfort, joy, and connection. They savor the diverse flavors and aromas of Indian teas, from the robust Assam to the delicate Darjeeling. Whether enjoyed in bustling tea stalls, cozy homes, or elegant tea rooms, tea lovers in India embrace tea as a symbol of hospitality, culture, and a warm embrace in every sip.

Now first of all let’s understand who a tea sommelier is. A tea sommelier, also known as a tea master or tea expert, is a trained professional who specializes in the world of tea. Similar to a sommelier in the wine industry, a tea sommelier possesses extensive knowledge and expertise in various aspects of tea, including tea varieties, origins, processing methods, flavors, and tea service.

He not only tastes tea but also has to identify the ­difference between teas and give expert advice on the various ways in which tea can be brewed in order to achieve a particular taste. One should have adequate knowledge of the cultivation and manufacturing processes in a tea plantation and be aware of all types of teas, leaves, grades and liquors. Tea sommeliers have knowledge of tea and food pairing, suggesting teas that complement specific flavors and dishes. They consider the characteristics of both the tea and the food to create harmonious pairings that enhance the taste experience.

Tasters also have to do branding and marketing of the product and coordinate with gardeners, importers, exporters, researchers, staying updated on the current trends in the domestic and international tea markets. Tea sommeliers are familiar with tea traditions and rituals from different cultures. They may educate others about tea ceremonies, etiquette, and cultural practices related to tea consumption.

The scope for tea sommeliers in India is growing steadily as the appreciation for tea and its diverse flavors continues to increase. India has a rich tea culture and is one of the largest producers and consumers of tea in the world.

They can find job in the Hospitality Industry including luxury hotels, resorts, tea rooms, and restaurants, is a significant avenue for tea sommeliers. As the demand for specialized tea experiences and tea pairings with food grows, establishments are increasingly recognizing the value of having tea sommeliers on staff to curate tea menus, offer tea tastings, and provide tea education to guests.

Then comes, Tea Retail and Specialty Stores assisting customers in discovering and enjoying high-quality teas.

India is home to numerous tea gardens and estates, particularly in regions like Assam, Darjeeling, and Nilgiri. Tea sommeliers can find opportunities to work directly in these tea-producing areas, collaborating with tea producers and offering expertise in tea tasting, quality assessment, and tea promotion.

Tea sommeliers can establish themselves as tea educators and consultants, offering workshops, certification programs, and corporate training sessions on tea knowledge, brewing techniques, tea service, and tea and food pairing.

Tea sommeliers can provide consulting services to tea businesses, including tea companies, importers, exporters, or hospitality establishments. They can offer guidance on tea sourcing, tea quality assessment, tea menu development, tea blending, and marketing strategies to enhance the overall tea experience for customers.

It's worth noting that the scope for tea sommeliers in India may vary depending on the region, local tea culture, and market demand. However, as the appreciation for tea and the desire for unique tea experiences continue to grow, tea sommeliers can find fulfilling career prospects in India's vibrant tea industry.

There are no formal degree ­courses available in tea tasting yet. There are a few certificate courses available in tea tasting that help students learn gain ­scientific knowledge and learn about the ­different techniques of tea tasting. The basic eligibility ­criteria for the course is ­graduation. However, if a student is sure about a career as a tea taster, then having an ­­educational background in food sciences, ­horticulture, ­agricultural science or even ­botany can aid in his/ her ­knowledge. If you wish to pursue a career as a tea ­sommelier, it is better to study in a tea producing country be it India, Sri Lanka or Taiwan. Working in a tea estate is ­important since you get ­hands-on experience

Working as a tea sommelier with a five-star hotel, can get you a ­starting ­salary of Rs. 50,000 per month which can further increase according to your experience and can even go up to 20 to 25 lakhs per annum.

Overall, tea sommeliers are passionate advocates of tea, and they play a crucial role in promoting tea appreciation, providing guidance on tea selection and preparation, and creating memorable tea experiences for enthusiasts and novices alike. It offers great salaries and exotic locations are on offer. Though jobs are few but openings are increasing. Additionally, one gets an opportunity to explore different cultures of the world through tea.
