Have you ever wondered why some people succeed while others struggle? What if I told you that the difference often lies in one simple word: discipline? Stay tuned as we dig into the essence of discipline, the role it plays in achieving success, and why failure often results from a lack of it."
Hello all, I am Kapeel Gupta, founder of study abroad academy. I am on a mission to coach and mentor 100,000 high school students and help them realize their dream of studying in the best universities of the world and build happy and successful careers for themselves.

The Essence of Discipline:
"Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. It’s the ability to stay focused on what needs to be done, regardless of the distractions or difficulties that come your way. Think of discipline as the engine that drives your vehicle towards your destination—success. Without it, you’re likely to veer off course or run out of fuel. Discipline always involves the act of reaching a goal, and it also reflects the level of commitment that is attached to the goal.
Take, for example, the story of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of India's most successful cricket captains. Dhoni wasn’t always the star player we know today. His journey began in the small town of Ranchi, where he honed his skills with relentless practice and unwavering discipline. Despite numerous setbacks, including financial hardships and initial rejections, Dhoni’s disciplined approach to training and his refusal to give up eventually led him to become one of the greatest cricketers of all time."
Failure and Lack of Discipline:
"On the flip side, failure often stems from a lack of discipline. When you fail to follow through on your commitments, when you allow procrastination to take over, and when you succumb to distractions, you’re choosing failure. It’s not that success is impossible; it’s that you’re not disciplined enough to reach it.
Consider the story of a student who dreams of scoring high in exams but spends most of their time on social media. Despite having the potential and the resources, their lack of discipline prevents them from putting in the necessary study hours. When the results come out, they realize that their failure was a direct consequence of their choices."
Importance of Setting Clear Goals:
"Setting clear, achievable goals is the first step towards maintaining discipline. When you have a specific target in mind, it becomes easier to create a plan and stick to it. It’s like having a map that guides you towards your destination. Without clear goals, discipline becomes much harder to maintain because you don’t know where you’re headed. When goals are set half-heartedly and they don’t reflect our top life priorities, there should be no surprise when we display low discipline and we fail. Your goals act like your pole star showing you way to success.
Imagine a ship without a destination. It will wander aimlessly, eventually running out of supplies or encountering rough waters. But a ship with a clear port of call has a purpose, a direction, and a reason to stay on course. The same applies to our lives. Setting goals gives us that direction and purpose."

Creating a Routine:
"One of the most effective ways to cultivate discipline is by creating a routine. A routine helps you automate positive habits and reduces the mental effort required to make decisions. When something becomes a part of your daily routine, it’s less likely to be skipped or forgotten.
Allow me to share a fun, potentially life-changing game I’d encourage you to play. Pick out an area of your life that you’ve had weak discipline in in the past. Set an objective relating to this area. Now, set that objective as your life’s top priority or at least put it in the very top few. Then set a minimum time that you will stay committed to this objective. I’d recommend a minimum of a month, but for this game you could even choose a week. If you can be disciplined for one week, you can be disciplined for as long as you choose.
Now, this is going to mean reprioritizing your time from your normal weekly schedule, but you’ll do it. Why? Because it’s your top priority!
While doing this, you’re going to experience an interesting phenomenon. In the past, when you have set half-hearted objectives, your brilliant mind would start figuring out how to get around the objective to get you back to your comfort zone. However, now you’ll find when it’s your top priority, your mind works only on achieving the objective and taking you where you really want to go.
Take the example of renowned author Haruki Murakami. He follows a strict daily routine of waking up at 4 AM, writing for five to six hours, then running or swimming in the afternoon. This disciplined routine has enabled him to write numerous bestselling novels and maintain a high level of productivity over the years."
Accountability and Support:
"Another key factor in maintaining discipline is accountability. Share your goals with someone you trust—whether it's a friend, family member, or mentor. Their support and occasional check-ins can help keep you on track.
Look at the story of weight loss journeys shared by many individuals. Those who join a fitness group or have a workout buddy are more likely to succeed than those who go it alone. The reason is simple: accountability and support can significantly boost your discipline."
Conclusion:
"In conclusion, discipline is a vital ingredient in the recipe for success. Failure often comes from a lack of it. By setting clear goals, creating routines, and seeking accountability, you can cultivate the discipline needed to achieve your dreams. Remember, every choice you make either moves you closer to success or pulls you away from it. Choose wisely."
